Generations to the Rescue
Grandparents to the rescue. Grandparents are the
“strategic reserve” in extended families. When times are normal,
grandparents are careful not to interfere in the lives of their children and
grandchildren. But in times of major family stress, grandparents change
their role, put on their “uniforms” and actively provide help and assistance. 1
Great Grandma Pricilla was a rescue worker for my dad.
She was a gentle loving place where he could go and have one on one attention.
Each day he would go to her home after school and be taught the piano.
Grandma was a gifted pianist and shared her talent with my dad when he was just
a young boy. Family life at this time was very stressful for him and he
looked forward to having her loving hugs and teaching at the piano.
Grandma’s talent was passed on. I have watched my dad
share his talent and find joy in his talent. He continues to develop his
skill by performing and practicing classical music. I love to hear him
share his memories of how loved he was by her.
Grandparents are the rescuing force that we can sometimes
need. They have an ability to love like no other can. I know their love
continues on the other side of the veil; and I still draw upon the guidance and
advice I received from my grandparents. I am incredibly grateful for the
influence my grandparents have had on me; and the influence my parents have had
on my children.
